Religious Practices

The Maldives is a 100% Sunni Muslim country, and Islamic customs are deeply rooted in everyday life. While private resort islands operate in their own "tourist bubbles" with very relaxed rules, the laws on local inhabited islands (like Malé or Maafushi) are strict.
Durante Ramadan (the holy month of fasting), be highly mindful. While resort dining functions normally, if you visit a local island or the capital, eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours is strictly prohibited out of respect for fasting locals.
Friday is the holy day, and some services may be limited.

Dress Code

Wondering what to wear in the Maldives? It depends entirely on where you are. On private resort islands, swimwear, shorts, and sundresses are completely fine. However, when visiting local islands (for excursions or staying in guesthouses), you MUST dress modestly.
Women should ensure their shoulders and knees are covered (a simple sarong or modest dress works perfectly). Men should wear T-shirts (no going shirtless) and knee-length shorts.
Swimwear is acceptable only at designated beach areas and resorts.
👙 Can you wear bikinis in the Maldives? Yes, on your private resort. On local islands, bikinis and revealing swimwear are strictly restricted to designated "Bikini Beaches" surrounded by privacy fences. Walking through a local village in swimwear is illegal and highly offensive.

🍷 Alcohol and Pork Rules

The most frequently asked question is: Can you drink alcohol in the Maldives?
The answer is yes and no. Alcohol and pork are strictly illegal on all local inhabited islands. You will not find a single bar or liquor store in the capital, Malé. However, private resort islands hold special licenses to serve alcohol and pork to tourists. You can drink freely at your resort, but you cannot carry any alcohol off the resort when you leave.

Social Interactions

Greet locals with 'Assalaamu alaikum' (peace be upon you) and respond with 'Wa alaikum assalaam.'
Remove shoes before entering homes or mosques.
Use your right hand for eating and giving/receiving items, as the left hand is considered unclean.

Photography Etiquette

Always ask permission before photographing locals, especially women.
Avoid photographing government buildings or military facilities.
Be respectful when photographing religious sites and ceremonies.

Language Communication and Useful Phrases

Official language: Dhivehi, but English is widely used, especially in tourism. Learning a few Dhivehi phrases will make locals very happy and enhance cultural exchange.
Basic greetings: 'Salaam alaikum' (hello), 'Shukuriyya' (thank you), 'Maafukurun' (sorry).
Useful phrases: 'Kihineh?' (how much?), 'Baajehey' (too expensive), 'Dhanyabaad' (thank you very much).
Numbers 1-10: 'ek, dho, tin, hathar, fas, ha, hat, asheh, nuva, dihah'.
Respectful language: Use 'Sir' or 'Madam' for elders to show respect.

Environmental Respect

Maldives is environmentally conscious.
Avoid touching or damaging coral reefs.
Don't litter, especially in the ocean.
Support local conservation efforts and choose eco-friendly activities when possible.

National Day (July 26): Independence Day celebrations with traditional dance and music performances.
Eid al-Fitr: Important festival marking the end of Ramadan, locals visit each other.
Eid al-Adha: Pilgrimage festival with family gatherings and charity activities.

Traditional music: Bodu Beru drumming is the soul of Maldives with strong rhythm.
